Chapter 22

In this chapter something that I learned was a lot more about who Nelson Mandela really was. For example some background information on him is that he was the leader of South African nationalists. Also that he was put on trial and convicted for the conspiracy to overthrow the apartheid government of his country and also for treason and some other things. Nelson Mandela's consequences for this was to be in jail for 27 years. Also throughout this chapter I learned a little about the way that the difficulty and struggling for peoples independence occurred. A lot of dates and events were something that I learned throughout this chapter especially with the time line that was presented. The time line really helped me to keep track of and to connect all of the events to the dates that they happened during. Some of these events were the Cuban revolution that happened in 1959, also the date that Gandi came back to to India after his time spent in South Africa. The Indian/ Pakistan independe...

Chapter 21

In this chapter something that I learned was that communism is going up and down from to today but it started in 1917. This chapter was really helpful to me because I struggle with remembering the dates of things with the event that happened that go with them. Karl Marx played big role in the bringing about of Communism. Karl Marx is the one who gave this idea a real meaning when he wrote his own Communist Manifesto in 1818. Another thing was that Communism was spoken of the behalf of and represented all over the world by the Soviet Communist International. Also Vladimir Lenin had a part in this, to when he gave his socialist party the name of "Russian Communist". The Tsar was revolted against by Russia in 1917. Another big part of this chapter was that the Chinese Communist Part was originated in 1921 by some people but most importantly by Mao Zedong. These people traveled over 6,000 miles to escape from the Guomindang government and Chiang Kai-shek. Thee peoples that were t...

Chapter 20

In this chapter I mostly learned that over two centuries what kind of impact colonization had. Asia would soon have a lot of strain with some of the western countries because of the actions that the Europeans had. Actually something that I learned while reading this chapter that I thought was interesting was that because of the actions that were taken by the Europeans it resulted in the way that  a lot of other countries are made up today. One part of this chapter is about the Great Depression and how the increase of unemployment was the outcome of a lot of banks closing, which was something that I have never thought of until reading this chapter. Also many of the colonies were impacted greatly in a negative way because in America they were harvesting a lot more goods then they were able to have purchased which was not a good thing obviously because it did not help the value of what was being exported to reduce in value. To free themselves from overseas attentiveness the military w...

Chapter 19

In this chapter I learned from the beginning that due to its earlier success China was a victim. Something else that I learned from this chapter was that a request for a less restricted trading relationship by the British was rejected by the Chinese emperor Qianlong in 1793. The necessity for the importation of manufactures from what they called "outside barbarians" was irrelevant to the Chinese. Another thing that I learned from reading this chapter was that in 1912 while Great Britain was still thriving China's state was collapsing. China began to have a lot of pressure be put on there starvation, small farmers, and there unemployment. Later in the chapter I learned about the Opium Wars between China and Europe. Also about the comparison between China and the Ottoman Empire because of Europe's neighbor of the Islamic civilization. Another thing that I learned while reading this chapter was that China and the Ottoman Empire were lessened because the balance of global...

Chapter 18

In this chapter I learned a little bit more about just how greedy the British really were. The British were involved in some sort of way with a lot of various different countries but it still was never enough for them, they were always left wanting more. Before reading this I already had some idea of just how bad the British really were but after reading this chapter I have learned just how messed up they really were. All that the British wanted from Imperialism more more and more. For example they were only looking to make a profit and continue to be greedy and want more and more wealth. This kind of got me starting to think that wouldn't eventually someone become perfectly content with the amount of wealth that they have, also if not then where does it ever end. Lastly when the colonial encounters occurred in Africa the British treated the African people very poorly and the British took way to much enjoyment out of the exploiting the African people.

Chapter 17

In this reading I learned about the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution is an era where the natural and reusable uses of labor like water, the power of animals, the labor of people, wood and wind were replaced for with things like oil, coal, natural gasses and fossil fuels. When I was reading this in this chapter it kind of baffled me because I thought that it was sort of ironic that back then we were using all of these healthier ways to have energy and then we switched to all of these more unhealthier ways thinking that we were progressing into something better. When know we are trying to go back to in our current time period like to the wind, and water as a source of energy to become more heathy. Many parts of the area were changed drastically due to this new way of acquiring energy. This would also have a huge impact on the environment. Another piece of information that I learned form this reading was that about 52 million pounds of were used in 1800 by the British texti...

Chapter 16 (Echoes though end)

Some important information that I did not learn and know about history until I read this chapter was that the abolishment of slaver occurred between 1780 and 1890. This time was when the eighteenth century enlightenment thinkers began to have their views about slavery turn highly.  There view became of the fact that it was extremely wrong to have slavery and that it was that every persons natural rights as a human were being violated. In the era of capitalism and industrialism the use of slavery was old and not a necessity. Also while reading this chapter I learned that the Haitian Revolution was a success. This revolution was in turn inspiring in a way to the extent of 3 more important rebellions took place in the British West Indies. Another thing that I learned in this reading was that humans were separated by nations with each nation having its specific independent political life and culture and territory by the end of the 20th century. Lastly the Atlantic revolution was the te...

Intro to part 5 and Chapter 16 part 1

In the beginning part of chapter 16 I learned about some different revolutions have have happened all over the world. I also learned the way that some of the revolutions then went on to inspire and encourage other revolutions that have occurred throughout history. In the North American Revolution I learned the date in which it actually started which was in 1756 and the date in which it ended which was in 1783. The whole reason that this revolution took place was because of the 13 colonies. The revolution was for the 13 colonies to claim their independence from Britain. The 13 colonies were not happy with Britain. They were unhappy with them because Britain was putting heavy taxes on the people that were living in the colonies. In return this pressure and inconvenience from Britain lead the 13 colonies to "revolt" in a sort of way to stand up for themselves in order to gain more freedom and to acquire more of a democratic state. Because of this revolution guerrilla warfare was...

Chapter 15

In chapter 15 I learned that a new way of thinking was starting to happen and it was know as the scientific revolution. I also learned that just like with christianity Europe was still spreading. During this time Martin Luther and the Catholic Church were having a big conflict. Something that I learned form this chapter that I did not really know a lot about before was that the Catholic Church was exposed for being corrupt by Martin Luther. This in turn then started a huge thing with everyone and many people converted to Protestants due to there anger with the Catholic Church. This then lead to a big increase in Protestants and eventually evolved into many Protestant churches all over in Europe. This in turn made the Catholic Church very upset and which then lead into what we now know as the 30 years war. This then resulted in territories being reorganized. Lastly something that I read during this chapter that even though I have already her of it happening before it was still just craz...

Chapter 14 part 2

In the second half of chapter 14 we learned a lot about the Atlantic Slave trade. A lot of Africans were taken from there home land and forced into work and labor. This really was something that I thought was crazy. All of the struggles that the Africans had to go through was all because of the Europeans needing someone to do all of their work for them. The Europeans came into Africa and literally took people and there relatives from there homes and put them through unremarkable experiences. Some of these horrific things that they had to endure were being put in unhealthy living environments on the journey back to the Americas. A lot of the time many of the Africans died on the way due to the terrible treatment they were given. Some of the Africans also went to the extent of committing suicide because they thought that being dead was better then living and being treated so cruelly in their terrible conditions of captivity. Another thing that really blew me away while reading this part ...

Chapter 14 part 1

How the Europeans wanted a part in the Indian Ocean Trade and how they managed there way into it is what we learn in chapter 14. The Portuguese:  The Portuguese would find places and land areas that they were confident in being able to take over and then they would begin to tax the merchants. When the Portuguese were looking for the land areas that they thought they were confident in being able to overtake and take control of, they would look towards the lands that were close to the Indian Ocean seaboard so that they would be able to participate in the trading going on. Silver:  The Japanese would use silver as a way to bring there country together and to get it back to where they wanted it to be. The Chinese would use the silver that they had as a way for paying for there taxes. Due to this it resulted in a huge necessity by the europeans for silver. They wanted the silver so badly because they wanted to buy the asian goods and be a part of the trading. Fur:  ...

Strayer, Chapter 13.

In the chapter 13 reading, something that really was interesting and something that I did not know about was that the British were the last of the European powers to have a colonial presence the Americas. And that it was a full century after Spain. Another thing that I really found interesting to learn about was that the land that they acquired was of New England, New York and Pennsylvania. Also that the land that was acquired was considered as the unpromising leftovers of the "New World" by the Europe and that they were considered as lacking in the obvious wealth and sophisticated cultures of the Spanish possessions. This really astonished me because not only that I am from New York but also that I can not think of New York as anything else than what it is now. It was also cool to learn the time line of how that not until at least the eighteenth century that these British colonies became far less prominent on the world stage than of Spain or Portugal. Another thing that I fo...

Intro to part 4

In the reading of intro to part 4 some things that caught my eye and interested me were when it talked about the most obvious expression of globalization and how it went to the europeans and there conquests and there conquer of the Americas. I found this interesting because I never really thought about this before. Another thing that I found really interesting about this reading form Strayer was about the slave trade and how it linked Africa permanently to the Western Hemisphere. Another thing that I did not know about until I read this was that the Europeans used the global silver trade to use the new metals from the "New World" to buy there way into ancient Asian trade route, which I thought was really interesting. Something else that I learned from this reading was that even tho the Americas ruled most of the worlds sea routes there military power in the mainland of Asia and Africa were very limited. In conclusion what I have learned from this reading was that even tho thi...
