Chapter 14 part 1
How the Europeans wanted a part in the Indian Ocean Trade and how they managed there way into it is what we learn in chapter 14.
The Portuguese: The Portuguese would find places and land areas that they were confident in being able to take over and then they would begin to tax the merchants. When the Portuguese were looking for the land areas that they thought they were confident in being able to overtake and take control of, they would look towards the lands that were close to the Indian Ocean seaboard so that they would be able to participate in the trading going on.
Silver: The Japanese would use silver as a way to bring there country together and to get it back to where they wanted it to be. The Chinese would use the silver that they had as a way for paying for there taxes. Due to this it resulted in a huge necessity by the europeans for silver. They wanted the silver so badly because they wanted to buy the asian goods and be a part of the trading.
Fur: There were few animals that would produce a decent grade of fur in Europe. Not a lot of Europeans would directly engage in commercial trapping or hunting. The Europeans would usually wait for Indians to bring the furs or skins to their coastal settlements and then later to their fortified trading posts in the interior of North America. The European merchants would pay for there furs with a various different different trade goods. Many of the Native Americans started to die because of the alcohol they were consuming from trades. They were dying because of the alcohol because they were really lightweight because it was something that they had never had before until the europeans came along. Along while this was occurring in the "new world" Russia was as well as looking for fur. They had some of the same effects in fur trading with Siberia, where they eventually found their fur, but Russia also began to tax Siberia.
