Chapter 19
In this chapter I learned from the beginning that due to its earlier success China was a victim. Something else that I learned from this chapter was that a request for a less restricted trading relationship by the British was rejected by the Chinese emperor Qianlong in 1793. The necessity for the importation of manufactures from what they called "outside barbarians" was irrelevant to the Chinese. Another thing that I learned from reading this chapter was that in 1912 while Great Britain was still thriving China's state was collapsing. China began to have a lot of pressure be put on there starvation, small farmers, and there unemployment. Later in the chapter I learned about the Opium Wars between China and Europe. Also about the comparison between China and the Ottoman Empire because of Europe's neighbor of the Islamic civilization. Another thing that I learned while reading this chapter was that China and the Ottoman Empire were lessened because the balance of global power was changing and that they did not actually fall under direct colonial rule. The change of global power resulted in consequences that were experienced by both the Ottoman Empire and China. Lastly I learned that Japan was known as the " New Wast Asian Power" and that Japan took fearless action towards the western powers that were progressing so that they would reconsider the uneven treaties.
